ALPOAC is first and foremost a youth organization, where the focus of the shows is on the youth and a family atmosphere. At our shows, we split the youth into age groups that allow them to compete with youth of similar age and ability, and also offer adult classes so that the whole family may show together. Youth are encouraged to try new classes, and trainers, parents, and even fellow competitors offer tips to one another for a better go in the class. Sportsmanship is alive and well at POA shows, with youth congratulating each other after a win in pleasure, or cheering each other on in speed events. To help promote the family fun atmosphere with a Halloween theme at our October shows, we have held a "reverse leadline" costume class where youth lead adults (yes, it is as hilarious as it sounds!), stall decorating contest, pumpkin painting, Trick or Treating the stalls, as well as our tradition of sharing a meal on Saturday night after the show. ALPOAC also sponsors clinics on different topics throughout the year, offering our youth the chance to advance their knowledge and horsemanship skills.
After many years of being dormant, the ALPOAC has now hosted a show each of the last five years. We even put on the Southeast Regional POA show in 2015!
Our 6th annual ALPOAC fall show will be held at the Celebration Arena in Decatur, AL October 22nd and 23rd, 2016. Our October show will be an open show, sanctioned by the national Pony Of the Americas Club, Inc, allowing registered POAs to earn POA points, and exhibitors of any breed to compete for daily prizes. This type of show is also a great way to showcase our POA ponies to people who own other types of equines and may not be familiar with POAs!
